February 26, 2024Mikell Calls Next Executive Director
July 30, 2024Spring is bustling at Mikell! Parish groups, weekend retreats, and Blue Ridge school groups have kept us engaged and vibrant. The Allan Folk School recently showcased this spirit with a weekend of art and community.
Celebrating its 25th year, the folk school has deep roots in the Work of Our Hands ministry, established by Elizabeth and Frank Allan (former bishop of Atlanta) and Glenna Smith, among others. Originating from a mission to promote art among underserved communities, the folk school at Mikell follows in this tradition, inspired by models such as John C. Campbell's community-art approach.
Located primarily in the St. Joseph the Carpenter Art Center, nestled above the Thomas dorm, the weekend was a hive of creativity. Students flocked to learn new skills from seasoned instructors or to hone their crafts alongside peers. Many leave the weekend with stunning creations, having contributed to the beautification of the chapel with stained glass, handcrafted altar pieces, and more.
Amidst learning, participants enjoyed forging new connections and rekindling old friendships.
The Folk School convenes biannually, in spring and fall. Keep an eye out for the next registration period, slated for early August.
